Resource Collective and Professional Development

The Resource Collective offers a professional development forum where CAPT’s institutional, organizational and individual members can offer or request courses, seminars, workshops and lectures or other events of interest to the general psychodynamic community.

The CAPT web site is the central location of the Resource Collective. The Resource Collective’s bulletin board provides the place for all course postings and relevant exchanges.

Regulation and the Need for Professional Development
The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care recently invited CAPT as one of three stakeholders (with the Alliance of Psychotherapy Training Institutes (APTI) and the Ontario Coalition of Mental Health Professionals) to an information session on the formation of the new College of Psychotherapists and Registered Mental Health Therapists of Ontario. Of the three stakeholders, CAPT was the only one invited that represents psychodynamic psychotherapy. With this recognition CAPT has an opportunity to take a leadership role.

Over the last few years, and especially with the impetus of the process to regulate psychotherapy, two realities have become very clear to us:

  1. One is that Toronto has a remarkable richness and breadth of training institutes. It stands out among cities across the continent. These training schools cover the gamut of the classical as well as contemporary psychodynamic trainings.
  2. Another realization is that opportunities for practicing psychotherapists to continue their professional development are less than they want and need.

Legislation for the regulation of psychotherapists is already in place. Over the next few years a Transitional Council will work with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care to develop regulations detailing the requirements for practicing psychotherapy in the province. Professional development of psychotherapists is certain to be a requirement of the new College of Psychotherapists and Registered Mental Health Therapists of Ontario. The Resource Collective anticipates this requirement and responds to the longstanding need for additional professional development opportunities. It capitalizes on what is already near at hand, namely the maturity, substance, and vitality in psychodynamic psychotherapy in Ontario, particularly in the greater Toronto area.

We invite you to become an active participant in the Resource Collective. Please send us your notices and they will be promptly posted on-line. The notice will remain on-line until the event date has passed. Please indicate if you wish to restrict your event to CAPT members only.
